Laura is completing a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at San Diego State University with an emphasis on postmodern therapies and multiculturalism. Prior to this, she has held a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Brigham Young University and worked primarily as a group therapist treating addiction and trauma. Laura is a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and came out publicly as gay in her ward setting about a year and a half ago. She currently runs the “Mormons and Gays: What is Changing and What Needs to Change” FB page which aims to share stories, articles and resources to help Latter-day Saints apply the basic principles taught on Mormonsandgays.org. In collaboration with Kristen Talmage Lindsay, a straight Latter-day Saint, Laura also recently produced “The Forefront Talks”: a 10 segment youtube series that offers a model of how LDS members can support those who come out about their sexual orientation specifically within the congregational setting. Laura and her husband, John, have been married for 10 years and have two daughters together. They are currently living abroad in Ethiopia while John completes his anthropological field work.
